> 12.2003.: bad sushi vernissage
stephan roters was born in gronau. he studied visual arts in enschede/nl and holds a diploma in photography. besides being an extremely visual visual artist, roters playes guitar and sings in the band "the bad sushi experience". in 1998 he moved from cologne to hamburg.
stephan roters uses various techniques to express his artistic visions: photography, illustration, the computer, acrylic glass, sounds - he shapes soft, but graphical visual landscapes without leaving the realms of reality.
except for his drawings, which are sketchy, comic-like outlines reduced to a highly ironic degree, he seems to touch his photographic images only delicately, spending hours and hours on little variations, to finally conceive humble artworks of tactile quality.
these photographs, often printed on simple cloth, become a pillowy feel, which invites the viewer to dive into the depth of the sea - because the sea, fish, underwater worlds are roters primary motives. being a passionate diver, he invites the contemplator to follow him on an underwater-like experience: down in the ocean, everything becomes soft and friendly, hiding the hostility of a potentially dangerous and unknown world.
together with poet and fellow musician klaus frieler, stephan roters exhibited at the heliumcowboy artspace in august 2003 with the show "the bad sushi experience", featuring the king crab eaters, a cooking crew from the düsseldorf area dishing out art-like fingerfood, and a gig by the band who gave the name to the exhibition: the bad sushi experience.
in october 2004, stephan roters and klaus frieler returned to the heliumcowboy artspace with their latest show, "schöne aussichten".
