5 years, 30 artists, 1.400 square meters.

After nearly 50 exhibitions, the heliumcowboy artspace celebrates its 5th anniversary this summer. We want to commemorate this accordingly – with a huge group exhibition featuring almost 30 regional and international artists that we have worked with closely in the past, and who all belong to the heliumcowboy family.

This anniversary exhibition gives us the opportunity to present the work of our artists and the gallery to a large audience. In order to achieve this, the location needs to be up to the task. Consequently, the temporary space we will move into for the duration of the show is as unconventional as our gallery: the former Broadway movie theatre, close to the central train station (Bieberhaus).

The 1.400 square meter large venue, by now stripped from all walls and in the state of a construction site, is directly situated in Hamburg’s City Centre, a mere stone throw away from the Art Museums and the Schauspielhaus (Theatre). It will be a creative playground and open installation space for he participating artists. At the heliumcobwoy artspace we prefer the breach with conventions and enable our artists to re-invent the concept of exhibiting. Over the past years we have proven to being able to create unique, useable and stable environments within our gallery rooms, at fairs/projects and beyond. Seizing the opportunity we provide them with, our gallery has been converted into diverse „habitats“ many many times by different artists.

This freedom and the lust to experiment will be the guiding idea of the anniversary show. The aim is to create a common world that is mesmerizing, inventive and inspirational at the same time, and to enrich Hamburg’s exhibition-culture in order to offer something innovative to the art-enthused visitor.

Not only requires this venture a large degree of visionary power, courage, passion and no fear of hard work, but also a great deal of megalomania. Here, at the Ranch of the heliumcowboy’s, we possess enough of all that.

5 Jahre heliumcowboy artspace: 30 Künstler auf 1.400 Quadratmetern

Nach fast 50 Ausstellungen feiert die Galerie heliumcowboy arspace in diesem Sommer ihr fünfjähriges Jubiläum. Dem Anlass entsprechend begehen wir dies mit einer großen Gruppenausstellung mit über 30 lokalen und internationalen Künstlern, mit denen wir in den vergangenen Jahren intensiv zusammengearbeitet haben und die allesamt zur heliumcowboy-Familie gehören.

Unsere Jubiläumsausstellung soll die Gelegenheit bieten, die Arbeit der Galerie und unserer Künstler einem breiten Publikum zugänglich zu machen. Dies bedarf einer entsprechenden Dimension, der wir auch bei der Wahl des Ausstellungsortes gerecht werden wollen. Denn so ungewöhnlich unsere Galerie ist, so ungewöhnlich sind auch die Räume, die wir für die Dauer der Ausstellung beziehen werden: das ehemalige Broadway-Kino in der Nähe des Hamburger Hauptbahnhofs („Bieberhaus“).

Die 1400 Quadtratmeter große, inzwischen völlig entkernte Fläche im Herzen der Innenstadt, nur einen Steinwurf von den Museen Hamburgs entfernt, wird als kreativer Spielplatz und offene Installationsfläche für die teilnehmenden Künstler dienen. In den vergangenen Jahren haben wir immer wieder bewiesen, dass der heliumcowboy artspace sich zwar auch tradierter Inszenierungsformen und der Ästhetik des White Cubes bedienen kann, doch bevorzugen wir den Bruch mit Konventionen und ermöglichen es unseren Künstlern stets, sich die Ausstellungsräume voll und ganz anzueignen. Das Prinzip Ausstellung und die damit verbundenen Möglichkeiten sollen dabei immer wieder neu gedacht werden.

Diese Freiheit und Experimentierlust wird auch Leitgedanke der Jubiläumsausstellung sein. Ziel ist es, mit konventionellen Formaten zu brechen, und die Ausstellungs- und Eventkultur unserer Stadt weiter zu entwickeln und dem kunstinteressierten Publikum etwas Innovatives zu bieten.

Dazu gehört ein großes Maß an visionärer Kraft, an Mut und Arbeitswille und natürlich auch eine Portion Größenwahn. Auf der Ranch der heliumcowboy’s gibt es von all dem genug.
