In these works, Alex Diamond transfers several aspects of the famous popular Japanese art of wood carving (18th and 19th century) into a modern, urban context: repetition of the same themes and subjects; simplification of perspective, nature and architecture; use of patterns and reduced color schemes; demonic characters. These works show a strong influence of wood cuts of the likes of Hokusai and Hiroshige.
The traditional, elaborate, technically challenging and time-consuming craft of carving into painted wood with tiny blades, is accompanied by modern means of urban expression. Mixing styles and techniques as well as the organic and experimental approach has always been a driving force in the work of Alex Diamond (more info)
