Rusudan Khizanishvili plays with mythological references and places archetypal heroines at the center of her works. The role and strengths of women are a recurring theme of the Georgian artist. „Coming from a traditional society where the role of women is changing, the associated increase in presence of women inside the society, her strengthening and relish of her own physical being is something that I systematically explore on canvas.”
Khizanishvili lives and works in Tbilisi, Georgia. She graduated from the State Academy of Arts in Tbilisi with a degree in painting and later in film studies. The artist is aware of her roots and at the same time places her work in a global context: “I feel fortunate that my artistic career developed amidst traditional limitations imposed on women in Georgia, they made me a stronger artist who has more to say.“
In Khizanishvili's work, questions about origins and the self are connected with references to biology and epigenetic as well as the cultural memory of society. She skillfully links mythological representation with universal themes that continue to preoccupy us today.
